The marking of summer comes with the close of another school year, and the removing of winter quilts from my bed. I find myself impatiently awaiting for the future to come, and forgetting to cherish the moments that I have now. This day will never happen again, so why not do something spectacular?
"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards."
-Søren Kierkegaard
As humans with the capability to remember and to have memories, reflection is something of great value that we often dismiss. Yet reflection upon ones life and who they are can be ver beneficial. It can bring clarity and purpose to your daily life, making happier and coming to peace with who you are and the world around you.
You can often find me reflecting in some manner, whether it be writing in a journal, lost in thought or even just talking with a friend.
One way to reflect that my good friend does is soothing called Thorns and Roses, every day at dinner time her and her family each share their Thorn (worst part of the day) and Rose (best part of the day) while the rest of the family listens. It's a way for them to connect and not just hear each other, but understand where they are coming from, uniting them more as a family. Visiting their house last week I participated in this with them and I found it extremely relaxing. It was as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
Another way to reflect is to write in a journal, this can come in many different forms and is my favorite type. There's just something I find very tranquil about writing in a journal.
Several summer ago I had a journal, one where I wrote down ten things I did every single day. Some days it was difficult to find ten different things, which may or may not be due to certain Netflix marathons. Other days it was hard to limit it to only ten things I did because my day was so exciting and full of noteworthy adventures. Completing this journal was extremely fulfilling. Just five minutes or so out of my day for a short reflection. It reminded me that life is a temporary thing, and as I live, I need to be able to cherish it, from my siblings, to cooked carrots (gross).

Our memories are unable to be beneficial to us if we don't use them. I can't tell you what the meaning of life is, but I can tell you that it is a lot more enjoyable if you're happy. Happiness can come in different ways, but reflecting on your life and analyzing it is a way to become in tune with your own emotions and content with who you are. It reminds you to stop and smell the roses.
