I woke up this morning to the sun streaming through my window, and a ache in my heart. On Tuesday, my grandmother died. The cancer that had infested her body, had finally took its claim on her life.
She was an amazing women, a feminist and the strongest person I know. She was a nurse when it was frowned upon to be a nurse, and an aerobic dance teacher well into her 70's (She was more fit than I was). She graduated from Stanford and Colombia with degrees in Science. She was brilliant and graceful, and I loved her to the moon and back.
We were lucky. We knew it was coming, and planned our family reunion accordingly. We wanted her to be surrounded by family and the ones who loved her and she was. She told me that above all else she wants my cousins and I to stay close and to continue to be there for each other, and I plan on doing just that.
This is my family. We are not perfect and we don't always get along, but they're mine forever and I will always I love them.
