gatsby

Costumes are my forte. In the act of metamorphosing into someone else I find utter delight. For   a friends Halloween party I was Daisy Buchanan from the Great Gatsby. I wore my grandmothers old cocktail dress, did my makeup as authentic as possible, and pinned up my hair so it looked short. It was a lot of fun, and I got tons of compliments.

I am currently obsessing over the soundtrack from the movie released in 2012 and realized that it was very controversial.

My mom and I saw the movie when it came out back in 2012. I liked it just fine, and thought it was a great illustration of the iconic novel. My mom on the other hand was hung up on the soundtrack and believed that it had ruined it. After doing a bit of research on why Baz Luhrmann (the director) choose to have such modern music in a otherwise period piece I've come to a conclusion.

In the 1920's flappers were scandalous, and so was Jazz. It was seen as filthy and obscene music because it was 'colored music'. Back in a time where things were extremely racist high class whites did not want anything to do with 'colored people'. (I'm not advocating for any of this, I believe in equality.) That all being said, after reading several articles I believe that the reason that Luhrmann chose to have mainly hip-hop and rap in the movie soundtrack is because it has the same connotation now a days as jazz did in the 1920's. Just as my mom doesn't like rap and thinks its not real 'music' in the 1920's she most likely wouldn't have liked jazz for the same reason.

You're probably thinking that you would have liked jazz because jazz is great. Yes, I like jazz too, and would like think I would have been a fan, but an upbringing can play a very large roll in preferences. If I were born into a muslim family I would probably worship Allah where as if I were born into a catholic family I would worship God and believe very different things. It doesn't mean its wrong, it's just different.

All in all I think that the deeper meaning of the soundtrack is just about as fabulous as my costume. So, next time you dress as a Gatsby character, take it to meaning, and do something a bit scandalous.
